CASING SOIL

After the incubated mushroom compost was brought into the seedbeds, the compost is covered with a 5-cm layer of casing soil. In and on this casing soil layer, the mushroom mycelium starts to form fruit bodies.

Casing soil consists of a mixture of peat and spent lime.

Peat I Sterckx

Peat

The peat consists of carefully selected species of non-frozen peat. They give the casing soil a soft, sturdy structure.

Spent lime I Sterckx

Spent lime

Spent lime is a calcium-containing by-product that is released in the extraction of sugar while processing sugar beets. To remove the last residual organic material, spent lime is weathered during 6 months before use.
